I found it difficult to believe my ears – on Radio 4, Rory Bremner has just given a very clear explanation of fiat currency. He told the audience that every time they say “money isn’t real”, a banker dies. It didn’t take long before they were shouting it in unison. Then he presented a world in which we had returned to the gold standard as utopia.
