  1. Probably not, in the way fish don’t notice water. If they had appreciated their position they’d hardly have given it up so easily.

  2. No. The brightest minds devoted all their energies to the pursuit of utopianism, whether based upon racial hygiene or an almost homoerotic idealisation of the workers. The only thing that slowed them down was the unthinking conservatism of the “not-brainy” plebs and some of the remanants of the old landed class. All it took was five years of wartime propaganda and true liberty was voted away in principle, although it took several more decades to really do away with it in practice. The process is still ongoing.
