This is so good I had to show you all how much energy we can now deploy, and point out how much more could be got.

i DETEST LIGHT POLLUTION WHICH IS WHY I LIVE IN THE WEST COUNTRY. NIGHT LIGHTING SHOULD BE WHITE NOT SODIUM YELLOW WHICH MAKES THE STREETS SEEM LIKE SOMETHING FROM HELL.

  2. I’m no lover of lighting in the country. Even so, it’s nice to see how rich we are. I wish everyone a bigger carbon footprint – except the greens, of course, who should be made to live in cold filth, just like our ancestors.

  3. Peter, the problem of “sodium light” is that it is, more or less, monochromatic. There is a strong emission line in the yellow-green and not much else. When you and I were young, and humans did not fear the element Mercury as they have been now taught to do by non-scientist-science-teachers (who are required to “deliver” the “GCSE syllabus”) street lighting was by what were gloriously taught as “Mercury Arc Lights”. These gave a predominantly bluish-white tone to the roads, which however also allowed you to perceive the colour of your girlfriend’s clothes, as there were enough emission lines in the rest of the spectrum. You could also see the colour of other cars, the few that were not black or grey-blue, and also perceive poppies by the verge-side as actually red.

When I’m Principal-Sec-of-State-for-War, all the sodium street lights will be replaced by mercury arcs again, or in default of that, simple tungsten filament lamps.
