Jaded by Mere Porn? How about This for Shock Value?

It takes a lot nowadays to make me open my eyes and stare at something in shocked disgust. This does the job pretty well.

Even so, it is well-composed and technically accomplished. Every detail works towards producing the desired effect – or would do if we didn’t know better about its main subject.

On the whole, I prefer socialist realism to Nazi art. I prefer both to most art produced in the democracies since about 1910. I’ve spent some very happy afternoons shuffling about Bratislava and looking at now neglected public art. There is a fine mosaic in the main railway station, and some good paintings in the central post office. There is even a fine statue – cast in concrete! – of some unmemorable apparatchik. It’s in the middle of a housing estate close by Ruzinov.

The best thing to do in a place like Bratislava is to keep looking up at the first and second floor of buildings in the centre. You will see things the natives stopped noticing many years ago.

  1. Well is that picture from Bratislava?

  2. No, this one is from a Russian collection. But there’s a lot of good stuff in Bratislava.

  3. Awesome! This chick is just amazing! A shame that I never heard of her before! If possible please post more of her!

  4. Is Aarian a spammer? If I don’t hear otherwise, I will delete his message.

  5. Could be a government spook, Sean. Also, the “Aarian” thing….perhaps that “department” thinks it’s trapping “nazis”?

But on second thoughts, it’s probably a spammer that got through. Some do, occasionally.

The artistic concept is very interesting, and would have given lots of subliminal public support among the Allies’ populations, when it mattered, to the myth of benevolent “Uncle Joe”. Personally, I wouldn’t have “met” them at Torgau in 1945, but crashed headlong into them using our air-superiority, ground momentum and increasing technical command of the War. This would be coupled with the fact that it was only April and there were at least 5 months of campaigning weather in front to go to Moscow, plus The Bomb nearly available for delivery, and th Soviets functionally-unable to field any more armies after the ones they then had, having literally “run out of people”.

All you people must think I’m a bloodthirsty scumbag who hates GramscoStaliNazis, and who isn’t happy unless he’s moving tin soldiers about on a chessboard.

Clearly the word “Porn” in the title has attracted an automated spam comment. Then again, there is no link to another website, so maybe it is a real human who has gone into “spam-shock” and turned quisling – i.e. now thinks of himself as a spam robot. An interesting psychological phenomenon.

  7. The picture reminds me of the classic “Private Eye” cover from the first Gulf war. It showed Saddam beaming benevolently down on some western children (at the time he was hinting that western kids in Iraq might be used as hostages). He is looking at one child and the speech balloon says “What do you want to be IF you grow up”.

  8. It’s a spambot, trying to build a profile as a “real” human by posting apparently contextually appropriate messages without links. If you keep attracting it, you’ll get messages with links after a while.

And just generallly, I do wish people wouldn’t use the word “porn” as a general perjorative. As someone who writes and draws adult material for a living, it really is annoying. Pornography: depictions of people indulging in a normal human activity which brings pleasure. Josef Stalin: psychopathic dictator and murderer of millions. I mean, they’re quite different things, aren’t they?

  9. Oh, very well, I’ll give in on that one. But what to do about our spammer?
