Good paper for us by Brian Micklethwait, some years old now but prescient. No, I am not just promoting Brian in case some of you think so. (A) He writes well, and popularistically, and (B) he just happens to have done the stuff I’m interested in expanding on right now on this blog, in the twylight of the Coming Dark Age.

Here’s the paper, anyway. You’ll need the adobe pdf silly nonsense (why can’t everything be WORD?) as ever for most of our stuff. I want to get it changed.

  1. David, there are many good reasons to use PDF over Word, some of which are:

-PDF is an open, ISO format which means that viewers for it can be created, even if Adobe disappeared.

-You don’t need to pay for Office to view the file.

-PDFs can be viewed on almost any operating system

-Formatting and layout are preserved as the author intended

There is a good discussion on word docs here: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.html

  2. OK Pete, I didn’t know that. I just thought that as I had to have an adobe viewer and I can’t even edit the stuff, that it was rubbish!
